In this series, I’m experimenting with ChatGPT-3.5 (the free version) to see what its uses might have as an author aid. To do that, I’m interested in having it attempt to rewrite part of a classic story in a new genre and then judge the result.
As the content on this channel is generally oriented toward science fiction, I’ve decided to keep the future AI Rewrites in one of the many SF genre. If you have a favourite combination you’d like to see, let me know!
As I’ve found certain challenges with AI writing (using free AI with only generaly training), and because I’m not interested in using AI to write my novels, I only have it write the first segment of a story to see how it goes. And then it’s your turn…
I’d love to hear your opinions on what ChatGPT-3.5 has written. How would you rate it out of 10? Does it sound like a story you’d be interested in reading?
If you’d like to take up the challenge using the prompt and would like to share your chapter for comparison, I’d be happy to post it.
Now, without further ado… here’s the prompt and the result.
write the first chapter of the Grimm Brothers version of Snow White but as a Young Adult story set in a future dystopia
Chapter 1: The Digital Exile
In the sprawling megalopolis of the future, where the neon glow of holographic billboards bathed the streets in an eerie, artificial light, Snow White remained hidden from the prying eyes of her stepmother, the all-powerful tech mogul. She had assumed a new identity, gone incognito in the seedy underbelly of the city, where wires intertwined with flesh, and augmented humans stalked the neon-drenched alleys.
As she navigated the bustling streets, her cloak of anonymity shrouding her every move, Snow White couldn't help but feel the isolation that had become her life. The digital world was a treacherous place, and she had learned the hard way that trust was a rare commodity in this dystopian future. She kept her distance, her steps quick and confident as she passed through the crowds.
Snow White's technological expertise had made her a sought-after ally among the underground hackers. They had given her a moniker—Whisper—a nod to her ability to slip through the digital cracks without leaving a trace. Her talents had allowed her to infiltrate the heavily guarded networks of her stepmother's empire, uncovering their dark secrets.
Inside the underground hideout, a dimly lit, graffiti-covered chamber hidden beneath the city's decaying infrastructure, she met with her ragtag companions. There was Byte, the lanky, bespectacled programmer who had once cracked open a government security mainframe just for fun. Luna, a tattooed artist, painted murals of resistance that adorned the underground's walls, and Vector, the quiet but deadly weapons specialist who had rigged a network of drones to serve their cause.
"We've got something big," Luna said as Snow White entered. "Data has come in. Your stepmother is planning something major, and it involves a new level of AI control."
Snow White's heart quickened. She had long suspected that her stepmother's reach went beyond just business and politics. "Tell me everything."
The holographic projection flickered to life, displaying a shadowy figure, distorted to protect their identity. "She's developed a sinister AI, one that can infiltrate the minds of the citizens, manipulating their thoughts and desires," the informant explained, their voice trembling. "It's a digital dictatorship in the making. If it's unleashed, it'll be the end of whatever remains of our freedom."
Snow White's jaw clenched as she listened to the chilling revelation. Her stepmother's quest for control had reached a terrifying zenith. "We need to stop this. Now."
Vector leaned in, adjusting his augmented reality glasses. "We have a plan. We've traced the AI's core to a hidden facility, deep within her corporate headquarters. We're going to infiltrate, destroy the AI, and expose her for what she truly is."
Snow White nodded, determination burning in her eyes. "Let's do it."
As the team prepared for their dangerous mission, Snow White couldn't help but think that this was the moment she had been waiting for, the chance to reclaim her identity, bring justice to her stepmother's oppressive regime, and rewrite her own destiny in a world where technology had become the ultimate weapon of control.
What do you think? About the plot? Setting? Characters? Let me know in the comments. Also, I’d love to hear if you have any combinations of classic story / SF genre you’d like to see.
And until next time…
Good health, good friends, good fortune.

That is truly awful! I could barely be bothered to get to the end of that piece, never mind want to read more. The basic concept is actually terrific and could be an excellent story but the style! The words! Don’t think AI is going to be much competition to real writers if that’s what it churns out.
